GO GREEK

It's officially spring recruitment season, so get ready to hear me say "Go Greek" a lot. This fall I went through the recruitment process to join a sorority. Now initially I wasn't sure Greek life was going to be a good fit for me. I had talked to a lot of my friends who are in sororities at other schools, and I just thought recruitment would be SO stressful. Granted, I was talking to a lot of people who go to schools like the University of Alabama, so their recruitment looks very different. I decided regardless of whether I'd give it a chance and the worst thing that would happen is I'd drop. I went to that first night and ended up feeling that it could be something I love. I also felt that Delta Zeta was different from all the other sororities. After visiting them time and time again, I sensed that this was the place where I could be myself. When I got my bid for Delta Zeta I was over the moon. I had found my home. My grandma was a member of a different sorority when she went to Ohio Northern, so she was quite bummed I went with her sister’s sorority and not hers, but she understood the connection I felt with Delta Zeta. The funniest part of going Delta Zeta, or DZ for short, was how many people I met who were Delta Zeta's at their colleges. In fact, that following weekend I competed and won Miss Ohio Teen Volunteer where our emcee, state director, and one of the Miss contestants were all in Delta Zeta. It is trust that sometimes you find connections where you least expect them.

After my initiation I was nominated and slated for VP of New Member Education. Following my nomination, I decided to apply just to do it. I didn't think as a first-year member I had a chance for a chair position let alone one on exec, but I figured it couldn't hurt to fill out the application and complete the interview. Little did I know that after that I would become the VP of New Member Education. I love meeting new people and teaching, so this felt like the perfect fit. As I've been transitioning into the role this semester, I'm getting everything for our Spring Bid Day. In case you're looking for something new to try that focuses on sisterhood, service, and growth, here's what you should know about Delta Zeta. Our philanthropy has a focus on speech and hearing. We help spread awareness, provide speech therapy, and raise funds for hearing aids to be distributed. As a member of Delta Zeta, you also get the opportunity to learn American Sign Language. As someone pursuing a future in theatre education with a focus on accessibility, this philanthropy really connects to me. During the year we will have various sisterhood events that focus on harmony within our chapter. In Delta Zeta you'll always have sisters supporting you at your events and cheering you on throughout your life.

Even if you don't think Greek life is your thing, I urge you to just attend one recruitment event before making your final judgement. I never thought I'd be in a sorority, let alone in a leadership position my first year. Take the leap and try something new. Tomorrow night is Chats & Apps with Delta Zeta from 5-7, so stop by and get to know us. Delta Zeta's last recruitment event is February 12, from 6-8. Join us to decorate cookies and see if DZ could be your new home!

  1. Wow, what many amazing accomplishments you have obtained. Congratulations for achieving your position in your sorority and chairmanship position. I wish you great success in these positions as well as your ONU freshman year. It must feel a little strange, first hearing many stories about sororities and deciding one which one to join. Still, I'm glad that you achieved so much in one year. Best Regards, VA
